Chart Choice with Signal 2 DJ Paul Fairclough

~ This is Staffordshire - 11/03/2011 ~

Here we give you the opportunity to find out about new albums that are out or about to be released.

It's always a pleasure to talk to Michael Ball on my radio show. Over the past 20 years we've spoken about a number of projects but his latest work – the album and tour Heroes – has really got him fired up.

I'm sure we can all remember Michael singing Love Changes Everything from the show Aspects Of Love which first brought him chart attention.

Well, over the years he's been a mainstay of the West End from roles in the original cast of Les Miserables right though to his latest creation, that of Edna Turnblad, the mother-of-one from Baltimore in the huge hit musical Hairspray.

Heroes is a bit of a departure for Michael as it is not a show tunes album.

In fact in parts it has songs that are a little off a couple of years old, including New York State Of Mind.

There are evergreen tracks like his take on Nat King Cole's When I Fall in Love and Stevie Wonder's For Once In My Life.

The final track on the album is a duet with another British singer who has recently gone into the West End, with a production of Dreamboats And Petticoats – Tony Christie.

The duet is of Tony's huge hit and theme to The Protectors, Avenues And Alleyways, written by the UK songwriting duo of Mitch Murray and Peter Calendar.

There are also nods to the 1960s with Long John Baldrey's Let The Heartaches Begin, Joanna and the haunting Bobby Gentry hit I'll Never Fall in Love Again.

Despite all these years in the business, Michael Ball remains as fresh as ever and has a huge and loyal fan base that will adore this easy listening album.

I can't wait to see him perform the album and more in his current UK tour which is about to get under way.

If you are looking for an album where you can sit back, relax and kick your shoes off, well this is certainly worth a consideration.

Don't just dismiss it as another album of Michael Ball show tunes because you will be pleasantly surprised.

That's it for this week's albums, remember you can hear more great guest on my show on DAB Digital Radio & 1170am Signal 2 weekdays from 3pm on the Home Run. Next week Signal 1's Simon Morykin will bring you up to date with the latest singles.
