Michael to have a ball in Wales

~ Wales Online by Gary Marsh - 04/02/10 ~

WEST End star Michael Ball is bringing his hit musical Hairspray home to Wales.

Fresh from a run in London's Theatreland, the show rolls into the Wales Millennium Centre at the end of March.

Michael Ball reprises his role as Edna and Les Dennis plays Wilbur Turnblad.

“I am so excited to be bringing this show to Welsh audiences,” said Michael, whose mother Ruth comes from Mountain Ash.

Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart as she sets out to follow her extraordinary dreams, inspire her mum and win the boy she loves.

Having played to sold-out houses in London, on Broadway and at theatres around the globe, this is the feel-good musical of the moment.

And it is opening its first-ever UK tour in Cardiff.

Michael won the 2008 Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as super-sized Edna Turnblad.

“Cardiff could not be a better venue to start the Hairspray tour,” said Michael, whose Mountain Ash family will no doubt be attending the show.

“The Wales Millennium Centre is stunning. People are talking about Cardiff all over Britain.”

Michael Ball is also helping to produce the show in his first venture into theatrical production.

He has previously been the big name on the front of house, rather than the man behind the scenes.

“I will be producing a show for the first time and am really excited about that,” he said.

“I feel like I have learned so much in my career, and as you get older you want to pass it on.

“I am hoping it will be a new and on-going venture for me as producer and leading man.

“There are other shows I would like to be involved with. I have really enjoyed working with the younger cast from Hairspray and helping them grow a bit.”

Hairspray, starring Michael Ball and Les Dennis, runs at the Wales Millennium Centre on March 30 until April 24
