Gloria |
Impressive? Absolutely. What do you think about the house then?
|
Michael |
It's very nice (lying down on the sofa). Should be. We've done it up nicely. And I'll make myself comfortable. |
Gloria |
I do like a boy who makes himself at home straight away. |
Michael |
We'll knock it through, I think it'll be smashing. |
Gloria |
I made a little few changes here and there |
Michael |
Yeah, where's the jacuzzi? (laughing) |
Gloria |
I just want to say hello and welcome to a very special Bank holiday edition of Open House. As you can see we have the very special co-host Michael Ball. And if you thought you were coming here to sing or just talk, forget it. You're gonna be right throughout the program. |
Michael |
It'll be my pleasure to do it as well. |
Gloria |
How have you been anyway? |
Michael |
I've been very well. So have you by the look of it. |
Gloria |
Yeah, know we are having great fun every day between two and three. |
Michael |
Yes smashing. Dodgy audience. |
Gloria |
Actually I thought they all came in for me. Are you all my fans or not? |
Michael |
Of course they are Gloria! |
Gloria |
How many came . How many are Balletttes? |
Michael |
Splendid. |
Gloria |
That's what they call themselves, your special fan club. The Ballettes. |
Michael |
Yes, well, there's, there's the musketeers. There are loads of them. |
Gloria |
Actually they are quite excitable, aren't they? |
Michael |
Oh hopefully, I totally like them. |
Gloria |
Actually you just came from a fitting today. Cause you like a bit of clobber didn't you? |
Michael |
Yeah. We, we are doing.. At the weekend it's Cameron Mackintosh's big "Hey, Mr. Producer". So looking at all of his different shows. So I've been back getting refitted for the costumes of Raoul from Phantom of the Opera and Marius from Les Mis. |
Gloria |
And are you still the same size as you were when you created Marius in Les Mis? |
Michael |
No, I'm a lot smaller (totally serious looking). I mean it's now trimmed down. |
Gloria |
Well actually that's gonna be an incredible show. |
Michael |
It should be amazing. Amazing. I'm also doing a bit with. We're sort of a redoing "Side by Side" by Sondheim. So I get to sing a Steve Sondheim song as well. It'll be great. |
Gloria |
Busy boy. |
Michael |
Ah, no. |
Gloria |
Well, what else do we have on this, apart from your good self? |
Michael |
I have a show to present, Gloria. Today (breaks out into laughter) I love this. We'll be reliving the glamour . (addressing Gloria) getting back .. We are reliving the glamour of Princess of Wales. We have got some of her most sumptuous gowns in the studio and we have the author of the controversial new biography of her brother Earl Spencer. What else we got? |
Gloria |
What, on your show? |
Michael |
Yeah, really nice having you. |
Gloria |
You always give me a fit of the giggles. I'll just make it up. Do you like me being your guest? |
Michael |
Yes, yes. |
Gloria |
Oh that's good. Well the holidays are just around the corner. We unraveled insurance for you when you travel. And today's cook is bringing you some touch of the exotic to the program. We know that Michael likes a touch of the exotic. And she is gonna be cooking . |
Michael, then the audience, then Gloria break out into laughter |
Gloria |
. a Thai-dish to die for. |
Michael |
Oh dear. |
Gloria |
Now in these health-conscious time . |
Michael |
You're in trouble now. You started it. You started it. |
Gloria |
No give me a bit of a giggle What |
Michael |
Oh get on with |
Gloria |
What I was going to say |
Michael |
Yeah? |
Gloria |
Michael |
|
Come to the kitchen! |
Michael |
Alright love. |
Michael and Gloria join cook Lesley in the kitchen. |
Gloria |
How are you? |
Lesley |
Oh, I´m fine. How are you? |
Gloria |
Have you met Michael before? |
Lesley |
You're in trouble. |
Gloria |
Yes, but he's also very good in the the kitchen. Serious stuff. Aren't you? |
Michael |
I do love cooking. Love it. |
Lesley |
You do? |
Gloria |
What you make? What's your. |
Michael |
Well at the moment I've, because it's been summer. I grow lots of different herbs and things in the garden, so I make big salads and all that sort of things. |
Lesley |
A gardener. Hey! |
Michael |
Yeah, yeah. |
Lesley |
Wow. |
Gloria |
So Lesley what are you going to do when you put into work today? |
Lesley |
Well we are gonna do a vegetarian dish and this is called Oriental Chip Salad with a Cashew Sauce. |
Michael |
Oh great. |
Lesley |
Yeah it is, even if I do say so myself, which I often do. So you're good in the kitchen? Come here boy. |
Gloria |
Aren't you glad? On the slab! |
Michael |
You've got a big chopper. |
Lesley |
Oh dear all right. Now what I want you be first for is I want you to cut very thick slices. Ok? |
Michael |
Oh, I know we normally have a sous chef for that, why don't you? |
Gloria |
He forgot to do it for you |
Michael |
Of course, I just have thought we are in Holland. Your chips! |
Lesley |
Yeah, cut this in halves. |
Michael |
I know! |
Lesley |
Yeah? |
Gloria |
And leave the skin on Michael. |
Michael |
You know the skin is best for you isn't it? |
Lesley |
Well, it 's... |
Michael |
It's actually big or? |
Lesley |
No, no, no, no that's fine. Now sprinkle them into that. |
Gloria |
You're too good at this Michael. |
Lesley |
Straight in. |
Gloria |
He did wash his hands. |
Michael |
I didn't wash my hands. |
Lesley |
Hold your hand up. |
Michael |
After that. |
Lesley |
Naughty boy! |
Michael |
Or that one. |
Lesley |
All right, once you've cut your chips big there is a reason for it, cause the bigger the chips the better they are for you. |
Michael |
That's fact? |
Lesley |
Less fat. That's fact! |
Gloria |
You didn't know that, did you? |
Michael |
I just told her. |
Lesley |
Oh put them in. Are you going to. |
Michael |
Yes, yes, sure. |
Lesley |
Ok so put the chips in .. |
Michael |
She's a side to'er. |
Lesley |
Right drizzle with some soy-sauce. |
Michael |
I do that. |
Lesley |
Do you like to drizzle. |
Michael |
I prefer a torrent. Is it light soy? |
Lesley |
No, it's dark soy. |
Michael |
Right. |
Lesley |
O and then a little bit of olive oil. |
Michael |
Mmmm. |
Gloria |
A couple of teaspoons just over these. Oh that's enough. And some black pepper. We, we won't put salt on, cause the soy is? |
Michael
|
Salty. |
Gloria |
Very salty. |
Lesley |
Very good and you young man can go off to the oven. |
Gloria |
This like today, what would you call in the old days, when we have. |
Lesley |
Oh Fanny and Johnny. |
Gloria |
Fanny and Johnny. |
Michael |
I know who YOU are. |
Lesley |
All right we're gonna make, we're gonna make the cashew sauce now. |
Michael |
Oh, and it´s only part one, love. Right sorry. |
Lesley |
We're gonna make the sauce now, we're gonna do a cashew sauce so we're going to roast them now, ok? So what I'd like you |
Michael |
No, I didn't do a thing. |
Lesley |
We're gonna roast some nuts. Roast the cashew nuts in some oil |
Michael |
What oil is it? |
Lesley |
This is just sunflower oil straight with the ?????? |
Michael |
Well, yeah |
Lesley |
Garlic, lovely. |
Michael |
I'm gonna stink now. You got the spoon? |
Lesley |
You ??? lately? |
Michael |
Yeah loads |
Lesley |
All right. As we got a little bit garlic in there we got to be a little bit careful though, cause we don't want the garlic to burn, do we? That wouldn't be so good. All right. A little more Soy sauce. You are doing a great job here. |
Gloria |
Dark soy sauce. |
Michael |
Yeah |
Lesley |
Dark soy sauce going in. Lovely and also some lime juice. |
Michael |
Splendid |
Lesley |
It will hiss and splatter alarmingly. |
Michael |
Right, as long as it doesn't go on the frock. |
Gloria |
I hope not on the designer suit otherwise we would be sued. |
Lesley |
Oh lovely, lovely, lovely. |
Michael |
That is great. |
Lesley |
Looking good. |
Gloria |
What do you think, Michael, so far? |
Michael |
Great do you use some sesame oil a lot? |
Lesley |
I do, but I tend to drizzle it on things rather than cook things with it. |
Michael |
Yeah, yeah, so it's really strong, isn't it? |
Lesley |
All right my darling heart. So what I would like you to do now is: get that into there. Do you wanna use the spoon. |
Michael |
Yeah |
Lesley |
Yeah, straight in. You need . |
Michael |
Oh bloody hell. |
Gloria |
Michael, it's like a ???you spill more than you drink. |
Lesley |
I'm going to add a touch of water to this and give it a bit of, a bit of an. |
Gloria |
And let's hope the lid doesn't fly off. |
Lesley |
Hey |
Michael |
It's really simple |
Lesley |
Now, go and get the chips which we did earlier. |
Michael |
Right |
Gloria |
Get your glove |
Michael |
These ones I made earlier. Gosh that was quick. |
Lesley |
Yeah. Ok, different. |
Michael |
Mind you, they're hot. |
Lesley |
All right, ok. |
Michael |
Yeah |
Gloria |
It's a puppet. |
Michael |
It's a puppet. |
Lesley |
Ok, we got delicious chips on the tops. |
Michael |
Where's the sauce? |
Lesley |
ut them on top of the salad. Ok and see what you got is a nice crisp salad. You got that crunchy gorgeous chips on then finish of with a little bit of our cashew dressing. |
Gloria |
Beautifully done. |
Michael |
Really splendid. |
Lesley |
We need a man with big hands for this. What I'd like you to do is take that and squeeze it over there. |
Michael |
You know what? |
Lesley |
Squeeze it over the chips. |
Michael |
Oh it's mostly gone over my hand though. |
Lesley |
And there you have oriental chip salad with a cashew sauce. |
Gloria |
Splendid yes. |
Lesley |
(Looking at Michael, who took one chip) Very hot. |
Michael |
That's gorgeous. |
Gloria |
Good |
Michael |
That is really gorgeous. |
Gloria |
While I'm laughing so that you cannot taste the sauce. We actually thought, Michael and myself, we thought that this cover of Lesley's fantastic book, can you see this? Not shiny, no that's ??? Look at this. Is that where you would like chips and the Oriental Sauce, isn't it? |
Michael |
Beautiful |
Gloria |
There's fab. All covered with peppers. You took this photo then? |
Lesley |
My husband. |
Gloria |
Good photographer. Yes it's excellent and we love the recipe. |
Lesley |
Thank you very much |
Gloria |
And I know that Michael will always be indebted to. |
Michael |
Well I try that.. |
Gloria |
When he tries to get into that Les Mis costume when he's eaten all these chips. They are marvelous. Anyway, while you lick your hands, would you like to tell everybody what's coming next? |
Michael |
We're gonna have some more from my co-presenter, Gloria .. |
Gloria |
What's her name? |
Michael |
Whatever! And we focus on the fashion of Princess Diana. We'll see you soon. |
Gloria |
We will yes. |
|
Interval |
Gloria |
Hello again. Soon to come on the program. we talk to Richard Barber about the revelation in his new book about Earl Spencer. And we got on the right road to travel insurance, but before that, well after I've repaired my mascara and sort of blown my nose and had a good old cough and recovered from laughing we return to that performer extraordinaire. He's often hailed as the king of the musical... I wanna give you the big build up. |
Michael |
Oh, you do well, you do well. |
Gloria |
Thousands of performances of course who has credit in successful, very successful shows like Aspects of Love, he was wonderful in that, Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables. And of course his recording career has been incredible. He has that Midas touch he tells me, because all of that have gone gold, pure gold. |
Michael |
You were asking for it. |
Gloria |
. Michael Ball. So, cashew nuts in your teeth then. Did you like them? |
Michael |
Nooo |
Gloria |
It's ok, Lesley has left of |
Michael |
Has she left the building? |
Gloria |
Yes, has left the building. |
Michael |
A bit of, needs a bit of sesame oil. |
Gloria |
A bit of sesame oil |
Michael |
Yeah, that's all. |
Gloria |
So that is the cook that is coming out of you. |
Michael |
Trust me, trust me. |
Gloria |
Trust me, trust me. Now it's time to talk seriously, talk abut your own career, because |
Michael |
It's over now, isn't it. After it. |
Gloria |
I saw you on the Royal Albert Hall. I saw you on the 50 th anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber's concert, his 50 th birthday and obviously that is to come up the 5 th /6 th July. |
Michael |
Yes that is on the 6 th July on a Saturday night. |
Gloria |
On the Saturday. |
Michael |
They cannot show the whole of the concert as it was over 3 hours long, but I think it's an hour and a half program. |
Gloria |
But you have to relive some of that, because of incredible people, Antonio Banderas, |
Michael |
Yeah. |
Gloria |
Glenn Close |
Michael |
Glenn Close |
Gloria |
What was it like, that? |
Michael |
I've got to say, I've been lucky enough to do some terrific things in my career. That really I think up to now is the high spot. It was chaos putting it together. A complete nightmare. Sound going wrong, light going wrong. It all in rehearsals and it came to the night. Everybody jelled, everybody got on with it, went out there and it was the most extraordinary experience. And what I love about these kinds of shows you know you've done them, is that you get all different turns of , from all different walks of life. You got the film stars with Glenn and Antonio, you have people like Elaine Paige, Sarah Brightman, Donny Osmond. |
Gloria |
Donny Osmond! |
Michael |
And all this. And no one can afford to have an ego. |
Gloria |
Or a dressing room |
Michael |
No exactly. |
Gloria |
You had no room? |
Michael |
We all share. I was sharing with Donny and Antonio, who is, I've got to say, one of the nicest guys I've ever met and Melanie Griffith was there as well with him and she came, so sweet. |
Gloria |
Does she keep an eye on him? |
Michael |
Oh yes. |
Gloria |
Because the papers always says that she. |
Michael |
He loves it. He is one of the Latin guys. He's all family-orientated and worships the ground she walks on. She came in after he done his first number, crying around her eye. She was so proud and it came to the interval. And he was getting ready to do Phantom of the Opera and he was getting on his tuxedo. He got a white shirt on. I should preface this actually by saying: When the designer phoned me up, who was designing the show, he said: " Hey Michael, we're designing this show and it is all in black and white. So we thought that all the good characters, people playing good characters in the white and all the people who are playing bad characters in the black. " And I'm playing, one of the parts was Jesus in Gethsemane. So guess what: Jesus is a baddy and he shops at Armani.
But anyway. So Antonio is getting ready. He is going to his tuxedo, he puts on his white shirt. "Michael is no right, white shirt, I don't like it. Is no good for phantom. I have to find something else." He got this tatty little book-like T-shirt. I said: "Oh, Tone. I can't let you go out like this. So I had a shirt, a black collarless shirt, that I bought to wear after it. "What, if you put that on?" So he put on this really, really great and very expensive shirt. And put it and go: "It's phantastic, it's fabulous, I love it though it's a little big here." And I said, the music is starting. I said: "Come on you'll wear it." And I'm gaffer-taping at the back of his neck and I'm throwing him on stage. |
Gloria |
How funny. |
Michael |
He came off and he said: "Do you want this back?" And I said: "No, no, you look better in it than I do, you have it." |
Gloria |
Well, when you cannot say this, but I can. You performed Gethsemane which I personally never heard you sing before. |
Michael |
Not, it's the first time I done it. |
Gloria |
Such a song and such a dramatic interpretation and watch out for it, cause Michael literally does stop the show. In a way at the end of it, there was only Glenn Close and yourself ... huge evation. |
Michael |
Well that's cause I'm here . |
Gloria |
I could have Glenn Close. I did ask her, she'd like to do the show. |
Michael |
That´s really kind of you to say. It was one of those, as I said before, one of these evenings where you just keep your fingers crossed and for some reason everything jelled. |
Gloria |
Everything works. |
Michael |
The voice were on form, the orchestra was just magnificent and I ate it up. |
Gloria |
One to watch for. Now I'm going to show a clip from a show that you did in Wales. |
Michael |
Yeah |
Gloria |
And I think the working title if not THE title. |
Michael |
THE title. |
Both |
Ball in the Hall |
Gloria |
It's gotta be you. |
Michael |
Not my idea. No way. Please no it was not. |
Gloria |
So what you did, 3 of these concerts that will be put together as one. |
Michael |
Yes we did 3 concerts that went out on Wales. 3 half-hour shows and now the BBC are putting them together for the network to turn them into one long special. |
Gloria |
So let's have a look at you. |
Michael |
Yes |
Gloria |
With whom have you in this case? |
Michael |
In this case I think we got Martine McCutcheon. Tiffany from Eastenders. |
Gloria |
From Eastenders. We'll hear a bit. |
Michael |
Yes (A clip is shown) |
Gloria |
Duets of course are very fashionable, aren't they? But did that one came together. For sometimes it is very difficult, you are rehearsing separately. |
Michael |
I've seen Martine, I think it was the Children in Need show and she came in and sang "Don't rain on my parade" and I thought: That girl has got a great voice and she has charisma and star quality and to act.., there is a big difference between getting up in a pub or in a Karaoke night and singing an having a belt and getting out in front of a big orchestra and a big audience and cutting it and she did. She just ate it up every moment. |
Gloria |
And did the harmonies all work? |
Michael |
No! If you have a look at the beginning of the song, you didn't see on the clip, at the very beginning of the song it's meant to be in harmony and she just didn't sing. She just said: Nah! and started wandering around me dancing. I love that |
Gloria |
But it's all fun. |
Michael |
That's spontaneous, it's great. |
Gloria |
I remember a couple of duets when you did your own show. |
Michael |
Ya. |
Gloria |
On television with Montserrat Caballé. |
Michael |
Oh that was sensational. |
Gloria |
Sensational. |
Michael |
Well it.. |
Gloria |
Was she fun to work with? |
Michael |
Oh, she was extraordinary. She's a large lady as you know. She's a . you get . Opera singers have a reputation and some of them deserve it. And so I was a little bit nervous about working with her. She came on. We did the duet "All I ask of you" from Phantom and when I'm singing a duet, you know I'm like this and I'm touchy and (imitating singing and in the meantime stroking G.´s arm) |
Gloria |
Oh, it's rather nice, that! |
Michael |
And she's got and these big eyes and she is giving it all like that and I'm going: Oh lovely". And at the end said: Oh Montse! |
Gloria |
Montse! |
Michael |
I said: Ms Caballé. "No, no, no, you can call me Montse". And I said: "hey, hope you don't mind we are singing this love song and I got very tactile." "Oh don't worry, I have so many places left for you to touch." In the series, in the series, I also sing with Lesley Garrett, who I wanted to sing with for ages. We do a medley of songs from the West Side Story. She's just amazing. |
Gloria |
She's wonderful, isn't she? |
Michael |
So we're gonna do a concert together at the end of August. |
Gloria |
She is an example of a singer who can straddle. |
Michael |
She really can. |
Gloria |
Serious stuff. |
Michael |
She takes, she takes notes. She knows when not to just belt it out to lay back on things. |
Gloria |
And have you given up the idea being a rock singer? I just ask, cause I remember one point you really wanted to be out with a band doing the old rock´n´roll songs. |
Michael |
I do it. |
Gloria |
Still? |
Michael |
Oh yes. I always have a section. The last. They will tell you (addressing the audience). The last concert tour we did, I put in a twenty minute rock´n´roll medley of all the best Jerry Lee Lewis songs, Chuck Berry songs. You know just the big rock´n´roll party. I love it, love it to bits. |
Gloria |
Well, I'm sure. Just for the moment. Ladies and Gentlemen, Michael Ball. Presenter doing well so far, isn't he? |
Michael |
She's not bad either. |
Gloria |
A thank you for Michael Ball. Well Michael will be staying with us right till the end of the program, cause I am determined that he will |
