Read what Michael had to
say about the album: The idea for this album came from my experience performing
my one man show "alone together" at the Donmar Warehouse in 2001. In it
I tried to tell the story of a performer's life, his relationships with
lovers and family, his audience, his work, God and himself, through the
medium of contemporary music. It was the sound track to a life and it
got me thinking about what I wanted my next recording to be about. I hit
on the idea of trying to tell the story of a doomed love affair using
the same vocabulary. This isn't the story of a specific relationship but
there are no emotions that these songs express that I don't have direct
experience of and, not surprisingly, so do the vast majority of people
who have ever been in love. The challenge was finding the right songs to fit the
story and the joy and frustration was wading through the huge catalogues
of music that detail all the different aspects of love. Help came from
literally everyone who crossed my path during this time. Nobody escaped
being cross examined about what was "their song" or which lyric made them
remember a specific moment in their relationship and I must thank all
the friends, family and co-workers who endured this process with such
enthusiasm, good grace, and patience. But in the end, the final decisions
on what songs would be best tell this story are mine and I am prepared
to take all the blame. The actual process of making this record, once we had
fixed on the music, has been one of the happiest, most creative and exhilarating
experiences of my recording career. I have been given the complete freedom
to make the record I wanted to make by the great team at EMI and that
is a rare act of faith these days, so thank you Mike, Teresa, Steve P.,
Steve D., Peter, Debbie et al and I look forward to a long and happy future
together making good music. Thank you to Simon Franglen for making what I heard
in my head a reality. You have fuided us all brilliantly. Together with
Andy, Jon, Pike, Olga and everyone at Air Lyndhurst, we have made something
to be proud of and had a great time doing it.... and Marc, you "greased
the wheels" magnificently. Thank you to all the great musicians listed
herein under the guidance of Simon Hale for working so hard and making
me laugh so much, expecially Ralph, Frizzy and Steve. Thank you Gavin, Ivan, Jeanette, Norman, Patrick, Callum,
Michelle, Rachel, Alex and expecially Jonathan for your inspiration and
perspiration. |
